Empowering Communities Through Craftsmanship | The Jeweller’s Box Company

The Jeweller’s Box Company is rooted in more than just beautifully crafted leather packaging; it is a continuation of a decades‑long journey that empowers communities, honours traditional skills, and transforms craftsmanship into sustainable livelihoods.

Guided by our Managing Director, Claire Weldon, this female‑led business thrives on creating bespoke leather goods while championing the economic empowerment of artisans.

Our story begins with the United Nations Decade for Women (1975–1985), which inspired the founding of Ambika Ltd in 1986 in London. Claire Weldon, along with two like‑minded partners, envisioned a venture that would support women artisans in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Chile, and Bangladesh. The focus was clear: harness their traditional handmade skills in jewellery, baskets, textiles, and Nakshi Kantha—a centuries‑old hand‑embroidered quilt originating in the Bengal region of India and Bangladesh.

By 1988, Ambika Ltd narrowed its focus to Bangladesh, recognising that concentrating on a limited range of crafts in one region would create deeper, more sustainable opportunities. Over the years, Ambika forged close partnerships with local craftspeople, gradually evolving from traditional handicrafts into bespoke, sustainable, and fair‑trade leather goods that reflect both cultural heritage and modern design.

As the business expanded, two subsidiaries were formed to refine our specialisation: The Jeweller’s Box Company and The Museum Leather Company. The Jeweller’s Box Company became our dedicated arm for wholesale jewellery packaging, while The Museum Leather Company focused on bespoke leather goods for cultural and heritage clients. Together, they allowed us to serve niche markets with precision and care.

In 2001, Ambika Ltd rebranded as Leather Unlimited, reflecting a renewed focus on leather and a broader product range. Throughout these transformative years, our commitment to fair-trade practices has remained unwavering, ensuring a stable income, dignity, and opportunities for our craftspeople—and enabling them to uplift and educate their families.

The journey did not stop there. In 2020, we embraced the digital age with the launch of The Handmade Goods Co., marking a new chapter in our mission to share artisan‑made leather goods with a wider audience. Today, we celebrate Claire Weldon’s pioneering entrepreneurial spirit and the vibrant community of craftspeople in Bangladesh whose skills and resilience continue to shape our success story.

At The Jeweller’s Box Company, every handmade box is a tribute to this legacy—where tradition, craftsmanship, and empowerment come together to tell a timeless tale.
